About Golf Solitaire

Golf is a fast, one-deck solitaire. 7 columns of 5 cards are dealt face up, and the aim is to clear every one of them onto a single waste pile. A card can go on the pile only if it is one rank higher or lower than the card on top, whatever its suit.

A game takes a few minutes, and every decision matters: which of two playable cards you take now decides what you can play next. Many deals cannot be cleared at all, so finishing one is an achievement.

Playing cards

Only the top card of a column can be played, and only onto the waste pile. It must be exactly one rank above or below the waste card; suits and colours do not matter. Cards are never moved between columns.

With Ace–king wrap, aces and kings count as one apart, so an ace can go on a king and a king on an ace. In Classic, they do not connect: an ace takes only a 2, and a king only a queen.

The stock

The stock holds the 16 cards that are not dealt. Each tap turns one card onto the waste pile, and it becomes the card to play on. The stock is only gone through once.

Winning and losing

You win by clearing all 35 cards from the columns, even with cards still in the stock. When the stock is empty and no top card fits, the game ends and shows how many cards you cleared; you can undo your last move and try a different line.

Your fastest win, games won and games played at each rule set are kept in this browser, along with a game in progress.

Tips and strategy

  • Look before you play. When two cards fit, pick the one that lets you keep going: the next cards in the columns may continue one run but not the other.
  • Build long runs. Going 5, 6, 7, 8 and then back down 7, 6 can clear many cards from one stock card.
  • Do not turn a stock card while you still have a play, unless the play would cost you a better run later.
  • Kings are the hardest cards in Classic: only a queen can go on them, so clear the queens with care.

Frequently asked questions

Can every game of Golf be won?

No. Golf depends a lot on the deal, and many deals cannot be cleared however well you play. The ace–king wrap rule makes more of them winnable.

Why is it called Golf?

Traditionally, the cards left in the columns at the end of a deal are counted as your score for that hole, and as in golf, lower is better.

Can I undo after the game ends?

Yes. When no moves are left you can undo your last move and look for a different line, or deal a new game.
